We are seeking an experienced Estimator specialising in earthworks and/or demolition to price and secure projects across civil, enabling works, and demolition packages. You’ll be responsible for producing accurate first-principles estimates, assessing risk, engaging supply chain, and supporting tenders from enquiry through to submission and handover.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare detailed tenders and estimates for earthworks, bulk excavation, cut/fill, remediation, crushing/recycling, and demolition works.

Complete quantity take-offs from drawings, specifications, surveys, and site information.

Build rates from first principles for labour, plant, materials, muck-away, disposal, and prelims.

Evaluate demolition scope including soft strip, structural demolition, temporary works allowances, and waste streams.

Develop clear method-related costings (sequencing, access/egress, traffic management, working hours, constraints).

Obtain and analyse supplier/subcontractor quotes; negotiate where appropriate to achieve best value and compliance.

Identify and manage commercial and technical risk (ground conditions, contamination, access, services, asbestos, permits, neighbours).

Review tender documentation and produce clarifications, exclusions, assumptions, and qualifications.

Attend site visits, pre-tender meetings, and tender interviews to validate scope and pricing approach.

Collaborate with operations/construction teams to ensure estimates are practical and aligned to delivery strategy.

Maintain accurate records of submissions, pricing build-ups, and post-tender feedback.

Support bid strategy including value engineering, alternative methodologies, and programme impacts.

Typical Scope Experience (Earthworks / Demolition)

Bulk earthworks, muck shift, disposal routes, tip fees

Ground reduction, formation, capping layers, compaction/testing allowances

Piling mats / crane mats / working platforms

Service diversions and protection (pricing allowances and risk)

Demolition: soft strip, mechanical demo, concrete breaking, crushing, segregation, recycling

Asbestos-related allowances (coordination, surveys, enabling) (if applicable)

Required Skills & Experience

Proven estimating background in earthworks and/or demolition (contractor or specialist subcontractor).

Strong capability in take-offs, first-principles pricing, and tender compilation.

Solid understanding of plant selection/productivity, disposal logistics, and programme implications.

Commercial awareness: ability to spot scope gaps, manage risk, and protect margin.

Confident communicator with the ability to liaise with clients, engineers, surveyors, suppliers, and site teams.

Strong Excel skills and experience with estimating software (e.g., Causeway, Candy/CCS, Buildsoft, or similar) beneficial.

Full driver’s licence (commonly required for site visits).

Qualifications (Preferred)

Construction/Civil Engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) desirable but not essential with proven experience.

Demolition-related certifications/knowledge beneficial (e.g., asbestos awareness, CCDO knowledge)
