My client a leading Tier 1 main contractor delivering major water and wastewater infrastructure projects is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Design Engineer on a freelance basis . This role involves working on the design and delivery of water treatment works , covering clean water and wastewater schemes as part of the ongoing AMP7 and AMP8 investment cycles .

As a key member of the design team, you will take technical ownership of civil engineering designs, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including process, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers . You will be responsible for ensuring designs meet all technical, safety, and regulatory requirements, while supporting project delivery from concept through to construction.

This is a contract opportunity, offering the flexibility of remote working, with occasional travel to project sites and client meetings as required.

• Lead and coordinate the civil design process for water treatment works , including potable and wastewater projects.
• Develop designs for reinforced concrete structures, pipelines, earthworks, drainage, and hydraulic structures .
• Produce, review, and approve detailed design calculations, drawings, technical reports, and risk assessments.
• Ensure designs comply with UK water industry standards , including WIMES, Sewers for Adoption, CDM regulations, and BS/Eurocodes.
• Support the development of temporary works designs and construction methodologies.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, regulators, subcontractors, and site teams , to ensure seamless project execution.
• Contribute to value engineering initiatives, identifying cost-effective solutions while maintaining quality and compliance.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers within the team.

? Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent); Chartered status (ICE or IStructE) desirable .
? Extensive experience in civil design for the water sector , with a strong background in AMP7/AMP8 projects.
? Expertise in reinforced concrete structures, pipelines, drainage, and earthworks .
? Strong proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage, or similar tools .
? Thorough understanding of CDM Regulations, H&S best practices, and environmental considerations .
? Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
? Experience working within a design and build (D&B) contracting environment preferred.
? Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
